It was a vivid, exciting and contemplative event for the very first three baptismal candidates for the new Bilston SDA Church. Not that Bilston SDA Church is new; its inception as a Church dates back to 1993 with only twenty members – most of whom came from Oxford Street SDA Church (now known as Wolverhampton Central). A first baptism in its own church building, were over the years baptism was held at the other Churches of the district.
The Church was almost full by the opening time of 4 pm. The candidates were bundles of nerves, waiting for the procession like walk to begin to the front of the waiting congregation. There were a lot of family and friends in attendance with the membership, it was wonderful to see the support that all had turned out to give the candidates.
Quietly seated, they wait as Pastor Appiah plays the role of master of ceremonies, once again a wedding ceremony comes to mind. It is no wonder that baptism uses the metaphor of a wedding. Just think of the gown worn and vows stated and everyone will certainly understand – a wedding with Christ no less.

Pastor Richard Jackson was the speaker of the hour. This gentleman is not of the calm speaking Stephen Fry type preacher, oh no, he fired on all cylinders as he made sure that the congregation understood in no uncertain terms, that God has your back whenever you put Him first.
It was as if he wasn’t really talking to the Church, but directly to the candidates themselves; for on numerous occasions it was if he was looking directly into their eyes! It almost felt as if, into the soul itself to one candidate in particular! He can certainly preach!
Let it be said that you can’t be comfortable when Pastor Jackson lays into you. His message was most certainly fitting for the occasion, as it was noted; the devil was not happy with any public affirmation to Christ Jesus; has was taking place at that moment, and all will need to know that God is there covering for you, how else can we face a supernatural power without one far greater?
Then the moment came. The vows and then the pool. The water just above lukewarm and deep! New pool, new experience? It certainly turned out that way. Pastor Appiah was certainly in a predicament, but it all turned out well. Each candidate went in and came out a proud member of the Bilston Seventh-day Adventist Church family. A family that is close kit, warm hearted and welcoming, and a warm welcome it was that was given to the new members! All were beaming with smiles, a lot of hugs and handshakes and even kisses – an unforgettable evening and a first for the Church.
Thanks to everyone that where there and to those that made the day a wonderful experience for all!
