Billy’s Farm
Billy Thomas
Many know Deacon William ‘Billy’ Thomas as a happy soul and very dedicated to his allotment (farm for me). So I decided that it was time to go and see just what Famer Billy has up his selves for harvest this year.
Many will recall the huge pumpkin Billy gave to harvest last year. A pumpkin that generated close to £100 for the Church. This year Billy is hoping to do much better and based on what I saw at his farm, it’s very likely!
On the visit, I came across Pastor Appiah and his family on an educational tour of the allotment for the children. There were also the other farmers of this very close knit group of men – Cliff, Brother Taylor and Dennis.
It was amazing how these farmers made effective use of the small amount of land. Use to sweeping vistas of hillside farms in central Jamaica; covering acres of land with corn, red peas, yams or potatoes, these men are very good at what they do in the small space.
The land is abundant with fruitful life – pumpkin, sweet corn, callaloo, spring onions, sweet potatoes and more. The sweat of their brows and the blessings of above as certainly made these micro farms the best I have seen. Farmer Billy is very proud of his pumpkins, many can be seen in the open and there are more in the shadows. A bumper crop is imminent indeed.
