It’s sunny! At last we can be out on our bikes for it is the Carver Wolverhampton Marathon 20k cycle event. The team got together at the usual assembly point (Clarence’s home, the team – H. Lawrence, C. Crosdale and E. Vickers) and then rode into town to the start line at West Park.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement, as everyone gathered at the start line. There were lots of children and ladies among the typical male cyclists, which says a lot about the acceptance of cycling in Wolverhampton and just how much the event itself has become a fixture in the city’s annual events.
The ride – not a race; although the Wheelers (WWCC) made sure that they dominated the sub 40 minutes segment of finishers! Our church team finished at 55.55 minutes, an improvement on last year and there isn’t any doubt that we will do better next year.
Everyone enjoyed themselves, there were no major incidents, even so, the organisers were well prepared with medical check points placed at strategic points along the route. Marshals where well placed and those segments with open roads had very light traffic and marshals.
Although the route is a short one – 20k (actually 12.4 miles according to my Garmin), there are a few technical bits to navigate. So please check the route before you ride it next year! Note too, it is a combination of open and closed roads, but marshals are about to control traffic. Map Link
It was indeed a well organised ride and all should have a go, but not do so without some training. There was also the marathons, but been a cyclist, I can’t say anything on those events, but with all the infrastructure in place to support the cycle sportive, I would say the running events are in good hands.
We are hoping that members and others of the Bilston community will join the club for Sunday rides in the East Park. You can contact Clarence or Horatio or Michael about the club or cycling at Bilston SDA Church.
