The Elder's Corner 2015

Theme : The Greatness Of God
Speaker : Kelsey Appiah

Brave, courageous, concise and authoritative. These are just some of the words to describe Kelsey's message. There is more too, for her closing statament; "God is great and has always been!" How's that for an introduction to a good sermon by a nine year old child?

This sermon by Kelsey was part of the day's programme by the children of the Church celebrating the theme: "The Greatness Of God." They managed the Sabbath School and the Divine Service.

Title BUC Women's Day of Prayer
Scripture Reading 2 Kings 4: 1 - 7

Sister W. Appiah spoke to the Church on the story of Elisha and the Widow’s Oil. She compared the historic settings to today. She spoke of the bad situations that many of us find ourselves in, particularly mothers.

She noted that we should put our values in the right place. Her values are in her family and in her Lord Jesus. She also said that we need to put bad situations in the proper perspective, do what you can and not what you cannot.

She made many other strong points for us to ponder on in her sermon. She was quite serious but her strong sense of humour came through. She was a delight to listen to and you should too.

Title What Is The Matter With You?
Scripture Reading Genesis 21

Pastor began his service with a reading from the book “Adventist Home,” page 19 by Ellen G. White. He said If the presence of God is at home it will be a happy home. He spoke of the life of Abraham. God saw Abraham as been very faithful, but Abraham had a turbulent life, he was, as Pastor noted, far from perfect.

He spoke of Abraham been told by God to leave his home. The message came to him alone, but Abraham went to his wife and told her of what God wanted him to do. Pastor pointed out the many obstructions his wife could had made. Pastor imposed a modern scenario to this conversation between Abraham and Sarah. A modern woman of today would possibly object to such a traumatic upheaval of life for the unknown future of moving home to a wilderness.

Pastor observed that she was obedient, Pastor used the term - obedient love. He pointed out there aren’t many wives that would had done what Sarah did. He continued to note that Abraham told Sarah that if anyone asked any questions of who she is on the journey she is to tell them she is his sister. Pastor said that it was possible Abraham was ugly and Sarah was still very beautiful in her old age.Out of fear Abraham told her to lie for him if she loved him. Sarah told the King that Abraham is her brother. Pastor said that many modern women would have left old Abraham for a rich and powerful King. In truth how many wold have turned down to offer to be such a Queen?

Pastor keenly emphasise that it is always better to tell the truth. We should all know better. The story of Abraham is an example of misplaced love that Sarah places in her husband - her obedient love in her husband makes her obey. Abraham tells her to lie, she obeys.

Speaker Pastor Astor Bruce
Title Born Again
Scripture Reading John 3: 1-7 (Jesus Teaches Nicodemus)

Pastor said that this [the Church] is the best place to be in the presence of God, to worship God in the beauty of holiness. He continued to say we are here only because of the mercies of God. He spoke of the number of people he had to bury this week. He said that we have a predicted three score and ten years to live. We don't know what tomorrow will bring. We can put our store in the hands of Jesus.

This is his first time for him and his family at Bilston Church. A long meter elder; who preaches long, is asked to preach one day. He took down the clock in the church and replace it with a picture of himself. One lady exclaimed in angish, “Oh Lord, they took down time and put up eternity!” Talk about ice-breakers, this pastor had a captive audiance and all was hanging on his every word.

Pastor’s message was timely and important to anyone who claims to be – ‘born again.’ As noted, to be born again by the spirt. A message you have heard many times but this time it was with a passion and vigour that it was very hard to miss! The gentleman was preaching as it from the mountaintop itself – such was the power of his voice. He notes that many that call themselves Christians are making the same mistakes of the past. Re-baptisms fail to make a difference. He asks the question how can we live a new life in Christ without the mistakes of our past. The answer – a spiritual baptism is of vital necessity to give new life in Christ. To be born of the water and of the Spirit is a necessity of a new life in Christ.

Title A Blessed Hope
Scripture Reading 2 Peter 3:10-18

The sermon began with the parable of the frogs. A group of frogs where going about their froggy business. There where two that were nosy and fell in a hole. They tried to jump out of the hole, but got weary. The others at the top said they should give up. One died, the other continued to jump and finally with a huge effort, the last frog was able to jump out of the hole.

How did you get out? they asked the survivor. He thought they were encouraging him to get out. They found out that the frog was deaf. The mouth can be use for encouragement or discouragement noted the Elder.  Instead of helping other to go to the kingdom it can cause others to lose their souls.

Please watch the video below for the sermon "A Blessed Hope."

Title A Righteous Man
Scripture Reading Lamentations 3:22,23

Pastor talks about family. He gave a very funny introduction that’s gets everyone's attention focused on him. He notes that the head of our family is Jesus, who is coming soon. He said he wants to speak of a bible family, the one in the book of Matthew.

He draws attention to the genealogy of Christ at the beginning of Matthew. He said that it’s there draw our attention. It’s used to announce that something amazing is going to take place. In the book of Matthew, that amazing announcement is the birth of Jesus Christ.

He gives us a look at the earthly family of Jesus. He describes Mary’s status as the mother of a King, but there is a problem with this. Mary is from Nazareth, a village of fishermen where born kings are born in Jerusalem.

Nazareth is also hardly a place to be at. Do not let your circumstances define you, Pastor notes, let God be the one to define you. This is one of the key notes of Pastor’s sermon. He repeated it a few times too. Making sure that all who were listening understood exactly what he was saying.

Please listen to the sermon. It's message is timely and important. Let God be the one to define you and not your circmstances as Mary and Joseph did. You will understand once you have listened to Pastor.

Pastor Simons wife performed the special song. She played and song "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" Her version was composed by her and it was an exquisite rendition and it is so sad it cannot be uploaded for you to share. Check out her album when you get a chance!

I have for you one of my favourite singers of this most beautiful song:
